Verbal Abuse: PSA Campaign
For this project I created three posters in support of the PSA Campaign. I decided that my posters should focus on 'verbal abuse' as that's something that I personally had to struggle with. Consequently, I wanted to design a poster that would bring attention to others who also have to endure through such abusive situations.
What is Verbal Abuse?
Verbal Abuse is when a person uses their words to hurt or control another person. It can happen in a romantic or familial relationship. It can happen through friends, coworkers, or employers. Although different kinds of abuse (physical, psychological, or sexual) frequently go hand-in-hand, verbal abuse can also exist on its own. The effects and impact of verbal abuse can be devastating and traumatic.
Design 1 PSA Campaign Poster
While women are most commonly the victims of verbal abuse men are still not immune to such abuse. Consequently, I wanted this first design to reflect that reality. The black and white imagery brings a certain emotion to the poster that grabs your attention. The poster has great rhythm, pattern and hierarchy
Design 2 PSA Campaign Poster
I wanted this design to give the viewer a glimpse of how a victim of verbal abuse can seem content and happy on the outside, yet inwardly be hiding their emotions of pain and grief. The images are similar to the black and white design in the first picture as I kept the same design pattern and format of the text of the first design. However, I still think it gives off a different effect through the juxtaposition of the face staring out at us (the face she portrays in public) and the face looking down at the distance (the face of hopelessness she feels inside)
Design 3 PSA Campaign Poster
For my final design I wanted to return to much of the design style of the first picture, but with added color.  Adding color brings contrast and saturation to this design. This contrast and saturation will hopefully better grab peoples' attention in regards to viewing the poster. I love how the man is working to contain his sadness, yet (despite his best efforts) he's unable to hold back shedding a tear. It's powerful imagery.
